New Aesthetics in the Audiovisual: Live Documentary AV Performances & Hyperdigitality in Music Video
Cornelia Lund (University of Hamburg/fluctuating images, Berlin) and Holger Lund (DHBW Ravensburg/fluctuating images, Berlin)

The lecture is organized in two parts presenting recent developments in the field of audiovisual artistic production.
The first part deals with a rather recent form of documentary practice: bringing together elements of the traditional documentary cinema, documentary approaches from the art milieu, and live audiovisual performance in live documentary AV performances such as “Super Everything” by The Light Surgeons (2011), “Intruders” by A-li-ce (2014), or “1 Hz” by Daniel von Rüdiger (2015). By intertwining elements from different media milieus, these performances create a very specific form of live documentary milieu where the senses, especially the auditive sense, are addressed in a way that challenges all viewing and listening habits shaped by traditional documentaries following a linear structure.

How to deal with digitalization—this question is the starting point for the second part. Several aesthetic developments have emerged over the past few years in the laboratory called music video. Videos show tendencies to avoid the look of the digital by going analog and retro, or, just the opposite, they are stressing the fact of digital artificiality, exposing and over-affirming it by being hyper-digital.
Hyper-digital music videos have not only shown and praised the potential and power of the digital, but they have shown how the digital infects our lives, our conditions of living, our identity, making the digital and its effects on our lives the main subject itself.
