Between two exhibitions, the art museum in Ravensburg opens its doors and invites you to the UNDER CONSTRUCTION series. A music-related film will be presented followed by a DJ set. The series focuses on more experimental film formats beyond the hegemonic, Western-centered cinema and music mainstream.
The third film presented in the series is PICÓ: Un parlante de África in América (Picó: A Speaker of Africa in America; Director: Invernomuto, Jim C. Nedd; COL 2017). The documentary explores the tradition of picós, lavishly decorated sound systems that fill restaurants, bars and street parties in the Afro-Colombian port cities of Barranquilla and Cartagena.
The DJ set delves into the Central and South American musicscapes associated with the film’s music. Salsa and cumbia music from the 1970s is a point of reference here, but also its continuation in cumbia digital, as well as current developments such as neo-montagem. Music styles that are currently resounding from the sound systems of Central and South America and are making their way from there to the global dance floors.
